It Is Well

Is it “Well” with your soul? Sunday afternoon my mom called me and there was a tragic accident in Guyana that included extended family being taken from this earth far too soon! It was shocking, it was devastating and as the details poured in—it was gruesome! Later as I processed the incident, questions rolled through my mind about what those dear ones must’ve experienced or what were their thoughts or did they sense something was off that day? Did they meet previous family members in heaven? Who greeted them at the pearly gates? But what about those that are left to find peace here in on earth? What about those that are still processing trying to figure out the whys in a world that isn’t always fair?
We may never understand why things happen the way it does in this world, but one thing that we can rely on and that is God is in control!

To all my family that I can’t give a hug to today but is grieving, questioning, needs His peace, I encourage you to trust the simple fact—God is in control! It is well! Love you💞

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say

It is well, it is well, with my soul

Rejoice!

So up bright and early this morning!!!

Last night, Dan and I organized “us.” I set everything out: made the girls lunches, they set out their uniforms, I knew exactly what I had to wear, book bags perfectly placed, Dan and I already planned for who was dropping off which girl, got our calendar up and organized for the month–I even had time to sit and just be! I was ready for today!!!

Then–the littlest decided to wake up and come in to our room this morning. Boom a change in the set schedule! Here we go–15 minutes before the alarm clock goes off— my feet hit the ground and it’s time to choose  how my day was going to play out. From the tears of crying about her socks, to brushing her teeth–I have to say outloud in my head today, “I will rejoice in this day!”

It may not be exactly what we planned and our schedules definitely get out of whack sometimes but choose to rejoice! Let’s be honest guys, this morning could have definitely gone a very different way of me panicking, yelling, rushing down the road but by simply choosing to rejoice in this day and choosing peace, I even found time to write this blog to encourage others. Make it a great day friends–Rejoice!

Pesky Mosquitoes

Summer is practically here! Summer cookouts, picnics, beach and pool days, going for walks, taking the kids to the playground and the list goes on!  But one thing that can put a halt to all that fun are those itchy, pesky bugs that attach themselves to you and before you can even think to swat at them, more than likely they have already started to feed on your blood!  Yes, I’m talking about the dreaded “mosquito!”
My girls and I were headed out for a walk a few days ago as our plan was to get in some exercise while spending some time together and our local news station approached us randomly to interview us on nonetheless: Mosquitoes in our area! That definitely inspired this post and you can find the news clip below.

They come out of nowhere–the bites itch at night and they keep popping up here and there and everywhere! So what are some ways to make prevent these bug bites?

Here are a few tips I found that works and some that I will be trying throughout the summer:

  • Bug Repellant Spray: Spray liberally before heading outdoors!
  • DynaTrap: this has been a life saver for us! This device emits UV light to lure the mosquitoes in.  After a week or so, check and empty the device.
  • Grow your own mosquito repelling plants (citronella, catnip, basil, peppermint)
You can crush these leaves and rub the oils on your skin–the natural oils they emit will keep these bugs at bay!
  • Get rid of any standing water in the outdoor areas. (make sure gutters are not clogged so that the water can drain freely from the top of your house) Mosquitos thrive and reproduce in warm, humid and dark areas.
  • Refrain from wearing heavy perfume/cologne or scented body lotions–the sweet smell attracts mosquitos.

How to STOP the itch?

  • Apply apple cider vinegar to bug bites to help stop the itching.
  • Vicks Vapor rub is said to ease the itching. (definitely helps)
  • Honey to soothe the area.
  • Banana peel–rub the inside on the bite for a few minutes.
  • Peppermint oil–a dab on the bite and it relieves the itchiness (TRUTH)
  • Rubbing Alcohol–the cooling effect of the alcohol immediately soothes the bite, reduces the size and swelling. (works for me)

What are some of your methods that works for you and your family to help with these pesky bugs?

Preschooler Learning in the Kitchen

Our almost 3 year old was up earlier than her two older sisters this morning…so she and I decided to make breakfast together. A little one-on-one time with just mommy  and some added fun with learning, that mommy totally snuck in!

Who says making pancakes can’t get a preschooler’s mind going?!

She got introduced to measurements, a review in shapes/colors and there’s lots of fine motor being used!

What are some fun ways you are keeping your preschooler’s mind busy this summer?

Avocado & Chicken Caprese Salad…

2 cups Romaine lettuce
1/2 cup Cherry tomatoes, halved

1/8 Avocado, chopped

2 oz. Fresh mozzarella, chopped

4 oz. Chicken breasts, chopped (I used garlic salt & pepper-seasoned, sauteed chicken breasts)

Fresh torn basil

Walden farms Balsamic

1 full lean and green, 1 healthy fat and 3 condiments

Alaina’s Tale

In the morning the girls and I are often rushing to get out the door in time to head to school. But the rule still stands that they have to fix their beds after getting up. Ofcourse, our oldest has always taken it seriously and is meticulous about her sheets and making sure the comforter is evenly spread.

Then there is Alaina…

Alaina will quickly escape the fact that she needs to fix her bed. In my haste, she would get away with it but daddy would remind her, “Alaina, you need to fix your bed in the morning.” A couple of weeks ago I noticed that as I’m tucking her into bed she doesn’t get under the covers. Now I’m totally one who loves to be snuggled under a big blanket or a super soft comforter whether it’s winter or summer–it’s how I drift off to dreamland.

Me: Alaina it’s time for bed, under your covers.

Alaina: no mommy I don’t like covers.

Me: hmm don’t you get cold?

Alaina: a little but I will wear tights under my nightgown.

Me: (alittle confused) ok then–I don’t want you to be uncomfortable though.

Alaina: I’m not mommy but now I don’t have to fix my bed!

Me: oh yeah, why is that?

Alaina:  See… (pointing to her already made bed as she lies on top of the covers) its already fixed when I wake up!

What more could I say? She remedied her problem!

Two Digits–The Big 1-0!

Alyssa Danielle changed our lives forever ten years ago today–she was the first to give us a new title “mommy” and “daddy.”
This, not so little girl, is not only a wonderful big sister to two rambunctious little sisters but she is such a genuine, kind-hearted, super smart, beautiful and faith-filled girl. She loves the Lord with her whole heart and truly lets His light shine through her.

We love her and are so very proud of her and look forward to seeing how God continues to bless her as she serves Him in all that she does! Happy Birthday Lyssmiss! 🎉🎈🎉

Healthy B-Day Treat & Craft

Our second daughter, Alaina is turning five!  At school, she is allowed to bring in a healthy treat which means no cupcakes or birthday cake. I still wanted Alaina to be excited about celebrating with her class so after scouring through Pinterest, I decided on our healthy treat–A Butterfly Treat!

Ingredients

Snack size sandwich bags

Pipe cleaners

Gold fish

Fruit snacks                                           (princess ones in our house, ofcourse)

Directions

Tie the center of the bag with a pipe cleaner, to create two halves.

Fill one half with gold fish, and the other with fruit snacks.

Adjust the butterfly wings and antenna

(You can choose your own healthy items to fill the halves)

Simple yet super cute!

The Struggle is Real

So three kids, 60 pounds per kid on my ever so tall 5 foot body is hard to get rid of this time around. I’ve been able to lose it with a bit of work the last two times.   But this time, the last 20 is holding on for dear mercy. It’s like we’ve created some unhealthy bond and only one of us is willing to move pass this relationship.
What’s a girl to do when it’s been almost 7 months and I feel like I walk in the room and instead of the cooing baby getting the attention, I see eyes staring at me as they are trying to take the whole picture in? Let’s get real folks…I honestly did just have a baby, I work full time, we are moving so very soon and let’s not forget I do have a husband and two other kids that need me endlessly day in and day out!
Good enough excuses there right?
Well I wish!  But summer is drawing near, we are heading to the sunshine state soon, so I had to make a decision.  In March, I decided I was going to attack the last race I did a couple of years ago that kicked my butt.  It was a 1ok so 6.2 miles, here I come.  I figured it will get my body back in shape while I did something for me–you know how all moms tend to just want a moment for themselves.  This was going to be my moment.
Full force I started hitting the gym working my way back up to running.  But it definitely didn’t come easy. Some nights I was up several times with the baby or the occasional waking of a preschooler, let’s not forget to factor in all the post- partum hormones that new moms have still, and the constant aches and pains and hips going back into place, knee aches from running and shin splints from pushing too hard–but why do I lace up my shoes?
I gotta tell you it has not been quite the “moment” I expected or planned.  I often thought to myself during these last few weeks of training, a snickers bar could’ve been a “moment” too! What was I thinking?
I would love to be able to say as I’m now a few days away from Race day, I’ve loss all my weight and I’m pumped and ready to go.
But the struggle is real folks.
So again why do I lace up? I lace up because when I do cross that finish line, sweaty, tired, and sore–seeing my three little girls look at me with such admiration makes all the aches and pains worth it. To hear my husband say “I knew you could do it, I am so proud of you” makes that beast of a treadmill seem worthwhile over these past 6 weeks.  So do I still plan on lacing up after my big race day?  You betcha!  I still have that unhealthy relationship with that extra 20 pound friend but she and I will break our bond soon enough. Slow and steady will win that race.

And that “moment”?  Well nothing is more fierce than setting a goal and reaching it for yourself.
